Q. What is a Domain Name?
A. A domain name is a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that an organization or individual can reserve for its exclusive, world-wide use on the internet by paying a small annual fee to one of many domain name registrars. For example: www.jenreckarddesigns.com. Domain names are used in web addresses, email addresses and for many other kinds of internet services.
Q. What is Web Hosting?
A. Web hosting is a type of Internet service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own websites accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center.
Q. Pricing - Can I Make My Own Pricing Plan?
A. Of course I prefer that you adhere to the standard pricing packages, but if the listed packages don't really work for you, let's talk about it. Keep in mind though, that I generally cannot produce a site for less than the lowest listed price.
Q. How much does it cost for the consultation of the web site?
A. Nothing at all. The initial consultation is on me.
Q. Can I Put Music on My Web Site?
A. The answer is of course, I can do anything you require. The more important question is, "Should I put music on my web site?"
People often go on-line at work, school, or some other place in which a sudden, unexpected sound may attract unwanted attention. Embarrassed, the visitor or potential client will quickly exit your site to stifle the sound, and is unlikely to try again later.
However, there are instances where music and sound might be appropriate on a children's web site, a web site including on-line games, or a web site for a band or musical group.
Still, there are many effective web sites that do not employ sound or music. Why would one choose to forgo such a powerful attention-grabber? This tactic, often used by retailers to attract passing customers into the store is simply not necessary on a web site; the customer is already inside.
Q. Are There Benefits to Have A Flash Web Site?
A. Yes, but I strongly recommend against doing this.
Flash-heavy web sites score very low on usability, accessibility, and rankings. First, they tend to be more difficult to navigate, because every Flash site works differently. Many even require you watch a long video or animation before you can start using the site.
Additionally, the size of the text is often fixed, which affects users with very old or very new monitors, users with projectors, users who prefer to make text larger vs. wearing reading glasses and this is just to name a few. Users with visual or auditory impairments will have extreme difficulty navigating a flash site.
Some users simply do not have the Flash player installed and some may have restrictions that will not allow them to install it at all. Users in libraries and strict corporate environments, and users of devices like phones, PDAs and game consoles can't handle Flash content. You will have to decide whether these groups are important to you.
Finally, Flash sites look great to people, but to a search engine, which doesn't understand Flash and isn't interested in fancy animations, will not be able to index all of your site's content. Accordingly, your site will have a lower ranking than comparable non-Flash sites.
However if you do decide to do a flash site, it will require intensive SEO (Search Engine Optimization) work which have an additional cost to the maitenance plans listed on this site. For more information on Flash sites please email me: jen@jenreckarddesigns.com
